Four uni students in Beijing rocketed to fame on social media for their Star Wars-inspired dorm room - complete an 'R2-D2' trash can.

The quartet of juniors majoring in product design at the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) outfitted their shared space with an outer-space look.

Photos show soft-blue LED blacklights lining the ceiling and dorm bunks, giving the black wallpapered room an interior of a sci-fi space capsule.

"The space capsule idea comes from Star Wars," explained Deng Yadong, one of the students. "The blue light makes it like our dorm is in space," he added.

The room also boasts smart functions, like automatic curtains and a trash can on wheels that can be summoned at the touch of a button.

"We equipped it with a remote-controlled car chassis," said another roommate, Huang Junfeng. "When you want to throw something away, the trash can come to you."

The dorm does have one drawback. "All this fancy tech disappears if there's no electricity or Internet," said Song Shantai, another roommate.
