(ECNS) — A spokesperson for the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao Special Administrative Region on Tuesday voiced strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the latest so-called U.S. State Department human rights report, accusing the U.S. of distorting facts, smearing Macao's human rights record, and interfering in China's internal affairs.
The spokesperson emphasized that since Macao's return to the motherland, the "one country, two systems" principle has achieved remarkable success, which is recognized worldwide. The region's democratic system has improved, its economy has made historic leaps, and freedoms of speech and the press, labor rights, and other lawful protections have been fully safeguarded. Macao has maintained social harmony and stability, with residents living and working in peace and enjoying steadily improving livelihoods, the spokesperson said.
Safeguarding national security is the most vital and fundamental prerequisite for a country's survival and development, the spokesperson noted. The effective implementation of Macao's National Security Law will provide stronger guarantees for the steady and enduring practice of "one country, two systems," as well as for Macao's long-term prosperity and stability.
The spokesperson urged the U.S. to respect facts, immediately cease smearing Macao's human rights situation, and stop interfering in Macao affairs and China's internal affairs.
