(ECNS) -- Authorities in Beijing raised rainstorm warnings to red, the highest alert level, on Monday in five districts, including Shijingshan, Fengtai, Huairou, Fangshan, and Mentougou, advising residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor travel.
The Beijing Hydrological Station issued a blue flood alert on Monday, forecasting that the Beiguan Gate section of the North Canal basin and Manshui River in the Daqing River Basin are expected to rise to blue-level flood thresholds. Residents are advised to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying areas to ensure personal safety.
On the same day, a yellow waterlogging alert was issued for Beijing, with Haidian, Fengtai and Shijingshan districts facing high risks (orange alert) while other urban areas remain at moderate risk (yellow alert). It advised residents to follow weather updates, avoid low-lying areas, and take precautions to protect underground spaces from flooding.
Meanwhile, Beijing's water and meteorological authorities renewed a yellow alert for potential mountain torrent disasters, with varying risk levels across districts. Miyun District faces the highest threat (red alert), while Fangshan, Mentougou and Huairou districts are at significant risk (orange alert). Residents are urged to stay away from mountain waterways and avoid all outdoor activities in these vulnerable areas.
Affected by potential disasters, many scenic spots in the city have been temporarily closed. Fangshan District announced on Monday it has closed all tourist attractions and rural homestays, with camping sites suspending operations and organized cultural activities and art workshops canceled.
In Mentougou District, popular sites including Tanzhe Temple, Jietai Temple, Miaofeng Mountain, and other scenic spots announced temporary closures. Meanwhile, Fengtai's Garden Expo Park issued a closure notice, with reopening scheduled after the weather alert is lifted.
The city's emergency management bureau reported that several rounds of intense rainstorms from July 23 to 29 resulted in 44 fatalities in the capital, with nine people still missing. These losses underscore the severity of the current situation and the importance of heeding official warnings.
