(ECNS) - East China’s Jiangsu Province has taken the national lead by providing digital marriage certificates after inking an agreement with Alipay, the online payment platform of Ant Financial.

Couples who register their marriages in Jiangsu can can search for an applet named Jiangsuzhengwu, or Jiangsu Governmental Service, embedded within the Alipay app, and then acquire the digital version of their marriage certificate.

Marriage certificates are more than documents to prove marital status as they are also used in civil affairs such as applying for home purchase loans, property transfers, and property notarization.

Local newspapers reported the digital marriage certificate will be applied in different scenarios.

Zou Liang, vice-president of Ant Financial, said many cities already offer various electronic certificates for social security and driving licenses, and Alipay along with more institutes will contribute the digitization of more legal documents.
