(ECNS) - Illegal lottery and gambling apps can still be found on App Store in China and Android platforms despite a ban, Shanghai-based The Paper reported.

A dozen central government departments, including the Ministry of Finance, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Public Security, have issued a joint statement to reiterate the ban on online lottery sales.

No lottery agency was approved to open for online business, and related activities found on the Internet will face a crackdown, the statement said.

Apple was found to have pulled most illegal lottery and gambling apps from its App Store in China by Wednesday afternoon, and the six apps found with functions to top-up and purchase lottery tickets were largely already deactivated, according to the report.

A previous report by The Paper in May said App Store in China was flooded with apps selling fake lottery tickets and offering gambling services.

On Android platforms there are still dozens of lottery apps, some of which are still operational, according to the report.
