The BMW Brilliance Sustainability Report 2017, which was released at the beginning of November in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning province, outlines the achievements the joint venture - between German automaker giant BMW and the Chinese company Brilliance Auto - has made with regard to its high-quality products and services, contributions to society and sustainable development.

"Sustainability is one of the cornerstones of our corporate strategy, and this year marks the fifth consecutive year we have released the sustainability report," said Johann Wieland, president and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd at the release of the report in Shenyang.

According to the report, BMW Brilliance cut its corporate average fuel consumption to 6.17 liters per 100 kilometers in 2017, from 6.69 liters in the previous year, giving it the leading position among the joint venture automakers in China.

Per unit of product produced, BMW Brilliance's emissions of carbon dioxide decreased to 0.7 tonnes, down by 38 percent year-on-year, thanks to the automaker's technology upgrading and innovations in its production process.

The automaker's two plants in Shenyang are capable of producing fuel vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles on the same production line.

With the establishment of its new Tiexi plant and the upgrading of the Dadong plant, BMW Brilliance will realize even more flexible production, as the automaker will be able to produce all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel vehicles on the same line.

The production line is also only allowed to produce the all-electric models when there is high demand for them.

Having launched five new energy vehicles in the past five years, BMW Brilliance is about to produce its full-electric BMW iX3 model in China and export it to the global market from 2020.

"BMW Brilliance aims to be the leading sustainable provider of premium individual mobility," said Wieland.

As an advocate and a pioneer of strategic corporate social responsibility, BMW Brilliance attaches great importance to making the most of its own resources and core competitiveness to meet the actual needs of Chinese society, developing innovative and sustainable modes of operation, and creating shared values through long-term partnerships with all stakeholders.

"The corporate social responsibility programs are closely interlinked with the sustainable development," Wieland said.

Among the company's CSR programs is the BMW Children's Traffic Safety Education, which was launched in 2005, aiming to help children aged from 4 to 9 learn more about traffic safety and enhance their self-protection awareness.

The program organized an event in Shenyang in September, in which there were more than 1,300 participants. It was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest such event worldwide.
