The festival received 8,067 submissions from 125 countries and regions, including 479 from China, the fourth-largest number of entries by country. Of those submissions, 4,929 were entered in the Open Competition and 3,138 in the Thematic Competition.

The roughly 17-minute fantasy short draws on elements of traditional Chinese culture and follows a young girl who crosses a river in search of her mother as people on both banks work together to finish building a bridge.

A team of more than 10 people spent about six weeks producing the film, while video generation itself took just over a week. Executive director Wang Yuchen said much of the production time was devoted to refining the script and developing the film’s visual style.

The Last Span received a $50,000 prize for winning the Best Story category in the Open Competition. The award recognizes excellence in storytelling, narrative structure and emotional impact, according to the festival.
