(ECNS) — Hainan saw a 13.4% rise in inbound and outbound passenger traffic over the National Day holiday so far, the first since the Hainan Free Trade Port began island-wide independent customs operations.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Haikou General Station of Immigration Inspection had inspected 409 inbound and outbound flights and vessels, up 12.1% from a year earlier, and 54,000 passengers, up 13.4%.

The port at Haikou Meilan International Airport handled 30,000 inbound and outbound passengers, up 3.4%, while the port at Sanya Phoenix International Airport handled 22,000, up 28.7%.

Major sources of inbound travelers included Russia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Belarus. Chinese travelers mainly headed to Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Expanded visa-free policies have made travel to Hainan more convenient, with ordinary passport holders from 88 countries now eligible to enter the island without a visa.

To handle the holiday travel peak, immigration authorities monitored passenger flows in real time, opened additional inspection channels and facilitated faster and smoother clearance.
