(ECNS) — Chinese table tennis star Sun Yingsha said she had a fever before her round-of-32 loss at the WTT China Smash on Wednesday and urged fans not to worry.
Sun lost 3-1 to Thailand's Orawan Paranang in the women's singles round of 32. She won the opening game 11-8 but dropped the next three 4-11, 10-12 and 10-12.
Speaking after the match, Sun said her physical condition had affected her performance after a demanding Asian Games campaign followed immediately by the China Smash.
She said she had developed a fever the night before the match. Although her temperature had returned to normal by match time, she said she was still not in her best condition on court.
Sun praised Orawan Paranang for her performance and preparation, saying her opponent "played very well" throughout the match.
The loss, she said, was part of the ups and downs athletes inevitably experience.
Sun plans to use the next two weeks or so to recover and improve her physical condition before returning to competition.
"My physical condition is still under control, and I'm actively cooperating with treatment," Sun said. "I hope everyone can give me more encouragement and not worry too much. I also hope to recover as quickly as possible."
