(ECNS) -- Three Chinese nationals were killed and nine others injured in a bus accident in New York on Friday, the Chinese Consulate General in New York confirmed on Sunday.
Of the nine injured, seven have been discharged from the hospital and two others are still receiving medical treatment.
U.S. media reported that a tour bus carrying 54 people overturned while returning from Niagara Falls to New York City on Friday, killing five people and injuring dozens.
Most passengers were from China, India, and the Philippines. A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver was likely distracted during the journey, causing the bus to lose control, according to New York police.
The Chinese consulate has contacted the family of the victims and is helping with the aftermath.
A work team from the consulate arrived at the scene on Saturday to visit the injured in the hospital and provide necessary consular assistance.
