Number of Nanjing Massacre survivors decreases to 57

(ECNS) -- Wang Heng, who survived the Nanjing Massacre, passed away on Thursday at the age of 100, reducing the total number of registered survivors to 57, according to the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders.

In December 2011, Wang opened his account on Weibo, a Chinese social platform, under the help of his granddaughter to tell the miserable history after Nanjing was occupied by Japanese invaders.

He told the stories how his family fled to the refugee camp of Jinling Women's College in Nanjing before the fall of the city and how his father at his sixties was injured by Japanese Invaders and then died.

The old survivor had won a lot of Weibo followers. “I hope more Chinese young people can learn about the history through Weibo,” Wang said when he was alive.

Wang’s granddaughter also shares her grandpa’s daily life on Weibo. In the eyes of the families, Wang was thrifty and placid. He never wasted food and even rushed to buy soaps sold at a discount. Without telling his families, Wang signed up a body donation agreement.

“He often said life and death are natural and asked us not to cry when he passed away,” said his granddaughter.
