(ECNS) --Taiwan may allow individual mainland investors to buy shares in the local stock market, as a move to boost trading volume, a local newspaper said.

Tseng Ming-chung, head of the Financial Supervisory Commission, the top financial regulator in Taiwan, said at a meeting Saturday that the commission has been consulting with other agencies about lifting the ban on such investment since the beginning of this year.

Tseng said a decision may be made in January or February next year.

Despite a slow-paced economy, listed firms in Taiwan posted 6.52-percent year-on-year growth in revenue during the first nine months this year, he added.

The general manager of Taiwan-based Jihsun Securities Investment Consulting said the move is a significant marker, adding that many mainland investors have interests in Taiwan stocks.
