Nepal thanks Chinese forensic experts for helping identify flood victims

(ECNS) -- Nepal has thanked a team of Chinese DNA and forensic experts for helping identify victims of a devastating landslide and flood disaster across the border.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming and Nepal's Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation Mahabir Pun visited the experts at a laboratory of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology on Wednesday.

They were briefed on efforts to identify victims and match DNA samples following the disaster on Aug. 26.

Pun said China had provided DNA testing equipment and other emergency supplies after the disaster and had sent Chinese experts to Nepal to assist with forensic identification work. He expressed the Nepal government's appreciation for their efforts.

At Nepal's request, China's Ministry of Public Security dispatched 15 DNA and forensic experts to Nepal on Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 to support the country's post-disaster response.
