Peking Opera master finds home on social media

(ECNS) -- Zhen Shusuo, a 51-year-old Peking Opera actor from north China's Hebei Province, has gone viral on a Chinese video-sharing platform.

Zhen is a Daomadan actor, a female warrior role in Peking Opera who is skilled at using pikes and spears.

Zhen started to learn Peking Opera at the age of 13. She joined the Wenzhou Peking Opera Troupe in early 1990s. With outstanding performances, Zhen quickly became a pillar actor of the troupe.

When the pandemic disrupted her career, she occasionally found a bigger platform online. Zhen has since been showcasing her excellent acrobatic and fighting skills on social media, which has brought over 1.2 million followers.

At present, going live on social media has already become part of her life. "I didn't expect so many young people to be interested in Chinese opera culture. That has made me very happy," said Zhen, who hopes to spread Peking Opera to more people.
