Chinese scientist elected member of Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

A Chinese scientist was inducted as a foreign member in the field of biosciences by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Tuesday.

According to the official website of the academy, seven new members were elected during the general meeting held on Feb 12, representing the fields of chemistry, biosciences, and medical sciences.

Zhu Min, a professor of paleontology at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, was elected as a foreign member in the field of biosciences.

Professor Zhu has long been dedicated to the study of fish evolutionary biology, and has made significant contributions in several areas, including the origin of jaws, the origin and evolution of osteichthyans (bony fish), and the transition of fish to land vertebrates, according to the institute.

He has received numerous awards, such as the "China Youth May Fourth Medal", the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the China Young Scientist Award, the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2021, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, founded in 1739 and based in Stockholm, Sweden, is one of the oldest academies of sciences in the world. The academy is responsible for awarding prestigious international academic prizes, including the Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics, according to its website.

Currently, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has about 480 members and 175 foreign members, covering a wide range of research fields such as mathematics, astronomy and space sciences, physics, chemistry, earth sciences, biosciences, medical sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
