Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence, a Chinese non-profit AI institution, strongly condemned its inclusion on the U.S. Entity List, calling the decision unjustified and urging Washington to reverse the move.

The step came as the U.S. Commerce Department's bureau of industry and security added BAAI to the so-called entity list, imposing trade restrictions that could limit its access to U.S. technology and collaborations.

In a statement, BAAI said that its research and technological advancements are publicly accessible and that it has actively engaged in international dialogues on AI safety.

"Artificial intelligence is a shared resource for humanity, akin to electricity and other transformative technological advancements," BAAI said.

"The U.S. decision contradicts the spirit of scientific innovation and global cooperation, severely undermining openness in AI research and development,"it emphasized.

According to the institution, BAAI has established a comprehensive open-source AI ecosystem, having released about 200 models and nearly 100 datasets, with global downloads of its models exceeding 600 million.

Despite the new restrictions, BAAI affirmed its commitment to its "nonprofit, open-source" mission, pledging to continue advancing AI research, fostering academic and technological innovation, and promoting the sustainable development of AI for the benefit of humanity.
