(ECNS) — All personnel responsible will be held accountable after a newborn was injured during an umbilical cord procedure at a hospital in Xuyi County in eastern China's Jiangsu province, local health authorities said Monday.
According to a statement released by the county health commission, a woman surnamed Zhang delivered a baby boy by cesarean section at the local people's hospital around 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2025. A serious operational error by a midwife resulted in the partial severing of the newborn's left middle finger.
The hospital immediately transferred the infant to a provincial specialty hospital, where surgery was successfully performed later that day. The baby was discharged on Dec. 31 and is currently recovering. The midwife involved has been suspended.
The commission said the incident exposed weaknesses in medical safety management and pledged a thorough investigation and strict accountability for all responsible parties.
