(ECNS) -- The ultimate purpose of Internet development must be to promote people's all-round development, with greater emphasis placed on a people-centered value orientation, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Tuesday.
Mao made the remarks when asked about Premier Li Qiang's keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen and China's views on risks brought by the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
"As Premier Li pointed out, despite rapid technological advances, one major question of common concern remains unchanged: how can the Internet better benefit humanity?" Mao said.
She further pointed out that internet-related technologies should enhance people's capabilities, expand their choices, affirm human worth and improve their well-being, rather than make people subordinate to technology or exacerbate divisions in human development.
To jointly build a community with a shared future in cyberspace, the international community should harness the power of technology to open new grounds for development, strengthen digital security, promote the sharing of digital dividends and improve the multilateral governance system, Mao said.
China will continue to pursue open innovation, promote technology transfer and knowledge sharing, and work with all to build an open, inclusive and dynamic global ecosystem for digital innovation, she added. "It will respect the legitimate cybersecurity concerns of all countries, confront security challenges and oppose erecting digital iron curtains."
China will also actively implement the Global Development Initiative, support Global South countries in building digital infrastructure and enhancing digital capacity, and promote more just and equitable global Internet governance based on extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, Mao concluded.
