(ECNS) -- A direct cargo air route between Zhengzhou in central China's Henan province and East Midlands Airport in the United Kingdom opened Monday, adding a freight link between China and Europe.
A Boeing 747-400F freighter operated by Air Central Airlines took off Monday from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport for East Midlands Airport, starting the route.
East Midlands Airport is a major express air cargo hub in the United Kingdom and the site of DHL's national hub there. In central England, it serves manufacturing and logistics centers including Derby, Nottingham and Leicester and gives access to distribution networks across Britain and the rest of Europe.
The route gives direct air access to the center of Britain's express delivery and distribution networks, which is expected to shorten transit times and cut transfer costs. Return flights are expected to carry more European goods to China, giving Henan importers more sourcing options.
Air Central Airlines, a subsidiary of Henan-based Zhongyu Aviation Group, is the only cargo airline based in the province.
The carrier has expanded its European network in recent years, launching direct cargo routes from Zhengzhou to Frankfurt, Germany; Brussels and Liege, Belgium; and Budapest, Hungary. Its independently operated routes to Budapest and Liege have run nearly 600 flights and carried more than 70,000 metric tons of cargo and mail combined.
