(ECNS) -- The 33rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Finance Ministers' Meeting opened in Hong Kong, China, on Tuesday, marking the first time the city has hosted an APEC ministerial meeting.
The one-and-a-half-day meeting brings together finance ministers or their representatives from APEC member economies, heads of relevant international organizations, and senior representatives of partner organizations.
Chen Xu, chair of the 2026 APEC Senior Officials' Meeting, briefed participants on progress and achievements under APEC China 2026. As host, China has worked with member economies under the theme "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together" and the three priorities of "Openness, Innovation, Cooperation," Chen said.
Chen described Hong Kong as an international financial, trade and shipping center, a core engine of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and an important bridge connecting China with markets across the Asia-Pacific and beyond. He welcomed participants to experience the city's distinctive appeal.
The venue featured thematic display boards and interactive areas showcasing Hong Kong's financial strengths and traditional Chinese culture. The financial displays presented policy information and market data on Hong Kong's green and sustainable finance sector, family offices, fintech and AI applications in finance, highlighting the city's role in connecting regional capital and supporting economic transformation across the Asia-Pacific. The cultural display featured traditional Cantonese opera costumes, ornate headdresses and handcrafted lion dance heads, alongside live paper-cutting demonstrations.
The APEC Finance Ministers' Meeting is one of the forum's key sectoral ministerial meetings and an important platform for economies across the Asia-Pacific to strengthen macroeconomic policy dialogue and financial cooperation.
