(ECNS) — An infrared camera has captured a previously unrecorded female Amur tiger with an unusually short tail in the Dongning section of Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, authorities said Monday.

Adult Amur tigers typically have tails about one meter long, and experts believe the short tail is congenital rather than caused by injury. The animal has been regularly spotted in the area.

Dongning is a key cross-border corridor for Amur tigers and leopards moving from Russia into China, said Wang Zhigang, head of the local forestry and grassland bureau.

Since 2021, the area’s monitoring system has recorded 310 tiger sightings and 1,313 leopard sightings.

A science education center opened in Dongning in July 2026, offering students immersive lessons on tiger and leopard habitats through virtual reality.
