(ECNS) -- Haikou Meilan International Airport in south China's Hainan Province launched two direct routes to Malaysia on Sunday, connecting Haikou with Penang and Kota Kinabalu.
The new routes are expected to boost tourism spending as travelers take advantage of the mutual visa exemption policy between China and Malaysia. They will also support economic and trade cooperation, cultural and tourism exchanges, and business travel between the Hainan Free Trade Port and ASEAN countries.
The Haikou-Penang route is operated by Hainan Airlines using Boeing 737-series aircraft, with flights every Wednesday and Sunday.
The Haikou-Kota Kinabalu route is operated by 9 Air, also using Boeing 737-series aircraft, with three flights every two weeks: on Friday and Sunday in one week and Wednesday in the next.
The airport said it has operated 45 international passenger routes serving 28 overseas cities so far in 2026. Its international network spans Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, and North America.
The airport said it would continue to launch new international routes and increase flight frequencies while improving services for international passengers throughout their journeys.
