(ECNS) — The inaugural China Dunhuang International Wushu Open opened on Saturday in Dunhuang, northwest China's Gansu Province, bringing together more than 2,000 athletes from over 140 teams representing more than 20 countries.
Participants represented countries including China, Russia, the United States, Belgium, the Netherlands, India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Malaysia.
A cultural performance at the opening ceremony featured Shaolin kung fu, which combines strength and flexibility, alongside Dunhuang boxing, a martial arts style inspired by the postures of Vajra figures depicted in the murals of the Mogao Caves.
Shen Zhengang, deputy director of the Martial Arts Sports Management Center under the General Administration of Sport, said the event drew on Dunhuang's distinctive cultural heritage and regional advantages to provide an international platform for martial arts competition and exchange.
The tournament also aims to support the Belt and Road Initiative and promote exchanges and mutual understanding among different civilizations, Shen said.
