(ECNS) -- China is stepping up international cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including joint research and development of medicinal resources with countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), to better meet local healthcare needs, a senior official said on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference for the World Conference on Traditional Medicine 2026, Huang Luqi, deputy head of China's National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, noted that TCM is now practiced or available in 196 countries and regions, and that China has signed cooperation agreements on TCM with nearly 50 foreign governments, regional authorities and international organizations.
China has further established 30 overseas centers for high-quality traditional Chinese medicine services and 31 national demonstration bases for exporting TCM services, providing medical care, professional training, scientific research and cultural exchanges, according to Huang.
Looking ahead, China plans to place greater emphasis on the quality and sustainability of its overseas traditional medicine centers and strengthen policy coordination and regulatory alignment with partner countries in areas including the registration of traditional Chinese medicine products, professional licensing, education and training, and the application of standards, he said.
China also plans to advance evidence-based research, scientific and technological innovation, and develop international standards for TCM, with the aim of delivering more tangible benefits to local communities, he added.
