(ECNS) -- China has approved a national standard providing technical guidelines for methane emission monitoring in the onshore oil and gas industry, according to the State Administration for Market Regulation.

The standard covers monitoring methods, equipment selection and calibration, and data quality control, providing a common technical basis for identifying and tracking methane emissions across the production chain.

Methane emissions are a major focus of global climate action. The standard is designed to address differences in monitoring methods and improve the ability to trace emission sources in China’s onshore oil and gas sector.

The standard has already been tested by major state-owned energy companies including China National Petroleum Corporation, Sinopec and PipeChina. It will take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.
