(ECNS) -- Four members of China's 21st medical team to Guyana spent nearly 17 hours in the Amazon rainforest on Thursday searching for Capadulla, a plant used in local traditional medicine, as part of a broader effort to explore Guyana's traditional medicinal resources.

The team left Georgetown at 5 a.m. with a local guide. As paved roads gave way to muddy tracks, the members traveled through rain and potholes and had a flat tire before reaching the target area, where the members observed and documented the plant’s natural habitat and physical characteristics. They returned at 10 p.m.

The medical team had previously learned about Capadulla through exchanges with local herbal practitioners and brought it back to China. Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine later used molecular networking to analyze its components, providing a scientific basis for further research into its potential medicinal value.

The trip also formed part of the team’s mission to deepen traditional medicine exchanges between China and Guyana beyond clinical care.
