(ECNS) -- Construction of the Changhai Cross-sea Bridge began in Dalian, northeast China's Liaoning Province on Monday, marking the official commencement of the longest cross-sea bridge project in this region.
This is the largest ongoing project featuring an artificial island and highway in terms of investment scale in China.
The bridge has a total length of 25.5 kilometers with a 19-kilometer cross-sea section and a 6.5-kilometer land section. It links Dachangshan Island in Changhai County and Pikou Port, crossing the Lichangshan Strait.
The total investment for the project is approximately 7.9 billion yuan($10.9 billion).
The cross-sea bridge features a four-lane dual carriageway with a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The project is set to open to traffic by 2029, which will resolve the transportation difficulties faced by Changhai County, the only island-border county in China.
The Changhai Bridge is located on the high-latitude of the Yellow Sea, where winter is relatively cold. The construction period is only about 8 months each year, and the seabed terrain also presents significant challenges for the project.
Once completed, it will further expand the national highway system, and play a milestone role in promoting regional development, said Yu Jingxu, deputy governor of Changhai County in Dalian.
