China's medical aid team to Guyana showcases Chinese aerobic exercise at Mashramani festival

(ECNS) -- The 20th China (Jiangsu) medical aid team to Guyana showcased the traditional Chinese fitness exercise Baduanjin, a traditional form of Chinese aerobic exercise, at the Mashramani festival celebration in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana last Friday.

At the event, members of the medical team dressed in traditional Chinese attire and performed Baduanjin to ancient music. Their movements earned multiple rounds of applause from the audience.

Du Boxiang, captain of the medical aid team, stated that Baduanjin originated in ancient China, integrating the principles of traditional Chinese medicine for health preservation while serving both as a fitness practice and a cultural heritage.

He noted that this cultural performance was a new initiative under the model of “health assistance plus cultural exchange.”

The Chinese medical aid team has been stationed in Guyana since 1993, with a total of over 1.3 million patients treated.

Mashramani is one of the most important national celebrations in Guyana. The name comes from the Indigenous language, meaning “celebration after hard labor.” During the festival, people across the country participate in grand parades, music performances, and multicultural displays.
