About one year ago, the girl’s mother, Jane, saw information regarding a search for child models on her friends’ updates on mobile messaging app WeChat, and she decided to give it a try. Foreign children or those of mixed descent often feature in Chinese advertisements as a way to woo consumers. A Shanghai-based agent, who likes to be called Flower, says she has helped about 400 foreign or mixed-race children, mostly from the US, Russia and the UK, appear in advertisements.
