11thOlympic Summer Games,1936, Berlin, Germany

The 1936 Games were the first to be broadcast on television. Twenty-five television viewing rooms were set up in the Greater Berlin area, allowing the locals to follow the Games free of charge. The 1940 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XII Olympiad, and originally scheduled to be held from 21 September to 6 October 1940, in Tokyo, Japan, were canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. The 1944 Summer Olympics, which were to be officially known as the Games of the XIII Olympiad, were canceled due to World War II. (File photo)
