Li Zhuquan collects valuable resources at a garbage dump in Guilin City, South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Li has been working as a security guard since he came to work in Guilin 15 years ago. During his spare time, he often manages to find valuable items from the garbage and has then used the waste materials to create 1,200 musical instruments. For example, he has used broken bamboo to make a percussion instrument. The 65-year-old said his brother, one of China’s first military band members, inspired his interest in music. Li said his masterpiece was to turn the trunk of a plane tree found at a construction site into an instrument that measured 2.8 meters long and looked like a combination of a Chinese Lute and a cello after one month’s hard work. Now living in a home of 120 square meters, Li has filled the house with all kinds of music instruments. (Photo/CFP)
