A woman holds her newborn outside her home in Lecong town of Foshan city, South China’s Guangdong province. The woman gave birth to a girl in July and then returned to her mother’s hometown in Hunan province for a short stay. After returning to Lecong, she was surprised to find her husband and parents-in-law were missing and couldn’t be reached by phone, and the lock on her home had been changed too. Many Chinese people, especially the elder generation in rural areas, still prefer boys to girls and this can lead to a large number of illegal sex-selective abortions. (Photo/CFP)
