Sanjiang village prospered due to the stationing of troops in Ming Dynasty and it saw Shaoxing soldiers and civilians taking on Wokou, or "Japanese pirates". To resist against the invasion by Wokou, the government set up garrisons along the coastline. Sanjiang village was among one of those places and later developed into residential areas for civilians.
