A sculpture by Chinese artist Xu Bing, Phoenix, hangs above water between two boathouses at the Pavilion at Arsenale – Giardino delle Vergini in Venice for the 2015 Venice Biennale. The installation features two monumental birds fabricated from materials scavenged from construction sites in urban China, including demolition debris, steel beams, tools, and remnants of the daily lives of migrant laborers. Each sculpture is 13 meters long and weighs 8 tonnes. They were exhibited at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art in 2012, having been completed in Beijing in 2010.
