(ECNS) -- The first fancy ro-ro ferry built for Algeria by China set sail from Nansha, Guangzhou, Guangdong on Thursday.

The ferry, with a cost of one billion yuan (about $155 million), is an international passenger ro-ro vessel whose routes span both sides of the Mediterranean.

It is 200 meters long, 30 meters wide and has a speed of 24 knots (about 44.5km/h).

It is environmentally friendly, green, energy saving and comfortable, and can accommodate 1,800 passengers and 600 cars at the same time. Algerian culture and art elements have been integrated into its design.

Its 12 decks include restaurants, outdoor recreation areas, bars, etc.

The ferry started construction in 2018, the 60th anniversary of China-Algeria diplomatic relations, and is a part of the Algerian presidential plan.

It marks significant cooperation on maritime economy and shipping between the two countries, and also the first ro-ro ferry project in China-Algeria cooperation.
