Heartbroken! Deadly mass shooting shocks U.S. again

A mass shooting on Saturday underscored that the recurrent problem of gun violence in the United States is aggravating.

Five people were killed and at least 21 people injured in an active shooting on Saturday afternoon in the Midland-Odessa area, Texas, local police said on Saturday.

The shooter, a white male in his mid-30s, was killed and "the threat has been contained," according to Odessa Police Department.

The following is some of the bloodiest mass shootings in the United States for the past two years:

-- DAYTON, Ohio, Aug. 4, 2019: A gunman wearing body armor shot dead nine people at a popular nightlife area in Dayton, Ohio. Police were patrolling the area and killed the suspect.

-- EL PASO, Texas, Aug. 3, 2019: A gunman opened fire at a shopping center in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 people and injuring more than two dozen. A suspect was taken into custody.

-- VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia, May 31, 2019: At least 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in the eastern state of Virginia, according to local police.

-- AURORA, Illinois, Feb. 15, 2019: A man killed five co-workers at a manufacturing plant in Aurora, Illinois, during a disciplinary meeting where he was fired. Later he was killed during a shootout with police.

-- THOUSAND OAKS, California, Nov. 7, 2018: A Marine combat veteran opened fire in a crowded bar popular with college students in Thousand Oaks, a suburb about 64 km northwest of Los Angeles, killing 12 people including a sheriff's deputy.

-- PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, Oct. 27, 2018: At least 11 people were killed and six others were injured after a gunman opened fire inside a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

-- ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, Jun. 28, 2018: A man shot through the windows of the Capital Gazette offices in Annapolis, Maryland, before turning the weapon at employees there, killing five at The Capital newspaper.

-- SANTA FE, Texas, May. 18, 2018: Ten people were killed and 10 others wounded when a shooter opened fire inside Santa Fe High School in southeast Houston.

-- PARKLAND, Florida, Feb. 14, 2018: A former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, opened fire with an assault-style rifle, killing 17 students and educators.

-- SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas, Nov. 5, 2017: A gunman with an AR-15-style rifle barged into a congregation at a small church, killing 26 people, more than half of whom were children.

-- LAS VEGAS, Nevada, Oct. 1, 2017: At least 59 people, including the alleged gunman, were killed, and more than 500 others wounded when the attacker opened fire, sniper-style, on an open-air music festival in Las Vegas. It was the worst mass shooting attack in U.S. history.
