Artificial intelligence (AI) enthusiasts in this part of the region can seek to have their appetite whetted at the upcoming annual consumer electronics show (CES) in Asia, which will take place from June 13 to 15 in Shanghai.
In its fourth year running, CES Asia 2018 is expected to attract more than 40,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors across Asia.
James Wu, general partner of Shanghai Intex Exhibition Co. Ltd, co-producer of the annual tradeshow, said he is very excited about AI this year, as it “could be applied into each aspect of consumer technology.”
“When it comes to AI application in vehicles, for example, last year it could be Level 2. This year we are going to see the Level 3 demonstration in vehicle applications,” Wu said.
There are levels ranging from 0 to 5 when it comes to autonomous driving.
According to tech content provider TechRepublic, Level 3 is where the automated driving system is able to monitor “safety-critical functions” under certain traffic or environmental conditions. This is to say, while “drivers are still present and will intervene when necessary, it is not required to monitor the situation in the same way it does for previous levels.”
Besides the hype on vehicles, Wu also mentioned of another trend – companies applying AI into digital ass>He believes the environment for technological development in China will continue to be friendly, and China is making huge progress in turning ideas into new businesses.
“In the past we were followers, but now Chinese companies are leading in some aspects. They are not only innovative – they are [also] protecting their IP (intellectual property) rights, so when they invest in the products, they can really benefit from this investment.”
At the end of the day though, Wu said business still needs market: if one’s technology is sustainable, if it is green, and if it can receive sufficient investment. In this regard, Wu opined it is still a rather long journey ahead for Chinese companies.
