Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam said on Monday that she had decided to postpone her 2020 policy address, which was originally scheduled this week.

At a press conference on Monday, the HKSAR chief noted that the decision to postpone the annual address was made for Hong Kong's public interests. She will deliver the address by the end of November.

Lam said the priority for Hong Kong was to revive its economy after the havoc of the COVID-19 pandemic and she would travel to Beijing later this month to attend meetings with mainland officials to discuss a series of support policies and measures.

If this year's policy address can include supporting policies from the central government, Lam said, it could enhance residents' confidence in the financial hub's economic recovery as well as revitalize business activities.

She added that the postponement is lawful and would not affect the normal operation of Hong Kong's Legislative Council.

Besides, the HKSAR chief announced that she was invited to attend Wednesday's grand gathering in Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China's first special economic zone.

She will be visiting Shenzhen with a number of HKSAR senior officials.
