Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been urged not to "play with fire," as it took a stance to increase confrontations across the Taiwan Strait, a mainland spokesperson said Monday.

Recently, leaders of the DPP administration have continued to make separatist comments and taken new moves to connect with the United States to seek "independence," making blatant provocations, said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

He made the remarks in response to questions whether the navigation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) forces on Sunday was intended as a warning to the visit of a DPP official to the United States.

The PLA's move was aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, as well as the common interests of compatriots on the two sides, Ma said.
