Voting for the 2019 District Council Ordinary Election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has concluded with an overall voter turnout rate of 71.2 percent, the chairman of the HKSAR Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) said on early Monday.
A total of 615 ordinary polling stations and 23 dedicated polling stations were open since 07:30 a.m. Sunday local time for the about 4.13 million registered voters to cast their ballots. The polling hour for the majority of the polling stations ended at 10:30 p.m. local time.
More than 2.94 million registered voters have cast their ballots during the polling hour, Chairman of the EAC Justice Barnabas Fung Wah said at a press briefing held at one of the counting stations.
The 452 elected district council members, together with the 27 ex-officio members acted by the rural committee chairmen in the New Territories, will compose the sixth-term district councils, the term of which will start on Jan. 1, 2020 and last till Dec. 31, 2023.
District councils are organizations at the district level that advise the HKSAR government on matters affecting the well-being of the residents and participate in the management of district affairs.
