In a fresh media release on Monday morning, Hong Kong police announced the arrest of 88 people on charges related to the Sunday, November 10 trashing of shops, malls and public utilities in several districts.

According to the police, as of 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, a total of 88 people were arrested for offenses of unlawful assembly, possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage, and using face covering while at an unlawful assembly.

"The masked rioters completely disregard law and order as well as other people's safety and rights. Their acts are outrageous," a government spokesman said in a statement late Sunday night.

Masked rioters gathered at multiple districts in Hong Kong illegally Sunday afternoon and committed destructive acts, including vandalizing MTR station facilities, setting fires, blocking roads, rampaging at shopping malls, to hindering law enforcement and harassing restaurants' staff and customers.

"Police will continue to take resolute enforcement action so as to safeguard the city's public safety and bring all lawbreakers to justice," police reiterated in the media release.

Both the Hong Kong SAR government and police have condemned the rioters' acts and have vowed a zero-tolerance approach to vandalism.
