Canadian national Michael John Kovrig is under investigation by the Chinese government for suspected involvement in activities endangering China's national security, Beijing News reported on Wednesday.
Kovrig was investigated by Chinese officials on Monday and the case is now proceeding, Beijing News reported citing Beijing Bureau of State Security.
Earlier, responding to the news of Kovrig's detention in China, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that he may have violated Chinese law if he carried out activities in the country because his current employer, the International Crisis Group (ICG), is not legally registered in China.
