Finance

China’s four largest banks in terms of total assets – Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China (ABC), Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and China Construction Bank Corporation – have successfully upgraded their banking licenses from being subsidiaries to becoming fully fledged branches in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which is home to 180 banks and 195 asset management companies from across the globe.

And last year, ABC was designated an RMB clearing bank in Dubai – one of the few destinations selected worldwide.

The DIFC, which is also home of two markets - the Nasdaq Dubai and the Dubai Mercantile Exchange, is the biggest banking free zone in the Middle East.

Technical cooperation

China's Hanson Robotics, producer of the celebrity humanoid robot Sophia, is partnering with UAE's biggest telecom firm Etisalat for future sales of its robots in the Middle East.

Sophia, designed by David Hanson, a former Walt Disney Imagineering employee and founder of Hanson Robotics, is a lifelike social robot that can establish relationship with people through 60 programmed facial expressions.

The use of Sophia in the education and business fields converges with Etisalat's support for digital educational strategy implemented in the UAE.

Further, UAE's major property developer Deyaar Development has partnered with China's Huawei to offer smart home solutions, with a five-year partnership established in October 2017.

The partnership would enable Deyaar to provide advanced technology solutions for residents in its properties across Dubai.

Agriculture

Chinese scientist Yuan Longping and his team have experimented with rice cultivation in the Dubai tropical desert, which has made great achievements in the two nation's agriculture cooperation.

Yuan Longping and his team have successfully planted seawater hybrid rice in east China's Shandong province, setting a record production of 500 kilograms per mu (0.07 hectare), as he announced on June 10, 2018.

The same rice was also successfully planted and harvested a production of 500 kilometers per mu in Dubai. It was the first time in the world that rice was successfully planted in the tropics.

Molecular technology was used in the breeding of the third generation super hybrid rice, according to Yuan, who is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

This will increase at least 30 billion kilograms of grain output to the country every year.

Tourism

During the first five months of this year, 192,500 travelers from China went to the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, more than any other national, according to Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism.

The total number of overnight hotel guests hit 2.1 million in the period from January to May, posing an increase of 4.9 percent year on year. Chinese visitors recorded a 19.9 percent increase. That's all benefited from the current visa-free policy being in place since Jan 16.

Chinese nationals living and working in the UAE represent a sizable 180,000-strong community and make a valuable contribution to the economic and cultural diversity of Emirati life.

Movie entertainment

The opening ceremony of "China film week" was held in Abu Dhabi, on July 15, 2018. Guests watched an elaborate promotional video Go Away Mr. Tumor with Arabic subtitles.

Ni Jian, ambassador to UAE, said the film week is not only a reflection of the deepening cultural exchanges between China and UAE, but also a strong proof of the continuous improvement of bilateral strategic partnership.

This activity will help the people of UAE to better understand the essence and charm of Chinese culture, he added.
