China has stayed committed to an independent foreign policy of peace, peaceful development and a win-win strategy of opening-up over the past 40 years, Chinese President Xi Jinping said while addressing a gathering at an event to celebrate 40 years of China's reform and opening-up policy in Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Tuesday.

"We have made a historic transition from a closed and semi-closed country to one that embraces all-round opening-up," Xi said in his keynote speech.

While noting China's contribution to the world's development, Xi said, "China has moved closer to center stage as a widely recognized promoter of world peace, contributor to global development, and defender of international order."

"We have actively promoted the building of an open world economy and a community with a shared future for mankind, and pushed for the reform of the global governance system," Xi added.

In the wake to rising protectionism in the world, Xi noted, "China has unequivocally opposed hegemony and power politics, and contributed Chinese wisdom, Chinese approach and Chinese strength to world peace and development."
