(ECNS) -- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were flown to New York on Saturday, and charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy and weapons offenses, according to a report by the U.S. National Broadcasting Company (NBC),
On the day, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a photo on his social media platform Truth Social showing Maduro on board the USS Iwo Jima. In the photo, Maduro was seen wearing handcuffs, with his eyes covered by a black cloth.
In the early hours of Saturday, explosions were suddenly heard in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, accompanied by air-raid sirens. Shortly afterward, Trump announced that U.S. forces had successfully carried out strikes against Venezuela and had captured Maduro and his wife and removed them from the country.
For months, the U.S. has deployed large-scale naval and air forces in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela under the pretext of combating narco-terrorism. To date, the U.S. claims to have sunk about 30 so-called drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific, resulting in more than 100 deaths.
