(ECNS) -- A court in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province has granted a divorce to a Chinese woman who survived her husband's attempted murder in Thailand, where he allegedly pushed her off a cliff during their trip.
The Qinhuai District People's Court ruled in favor of Wang Nuannuan, ordering her husband to pay 500,000 yuan (about $70,000) in compensation.
Wang, who was three months pregnant at the time, was pushed off a 34-meter cliff on June 9, 2019, during a trip to a Thai park. She survived after being rescued by a tourist and receiving medical treatment.
Authorities said her husband, surnamed Yu, had purchased an insurance policy naming himself as the beneficiary before the incident.
Wang later revealed that Yu had targeted her for her wealth, marrying her under false pretenses. She had paid off millions of yuan in gambling debts before refusing further support, prompting the attack.
Yu was convicted of attempted murder and received a prison sentence of 33 years and four months, which he is serving in Thailand.
In 2022, the film Lost in the Stars, which is based on Wang's experience, was released in China, bringing her story to the spotlight, winning her a wave of support from netizens.
