Seventy percent of adults, or 256 million people, in the European Union (EU) are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said here on Tuesday.
The Commission's original goal was to vaccinate 70 percent of adults "before the end of summer".
The bloc has delivered enough vaccine doses to reach this crucial milestone with its vaccination campaign that started to roll out in December 2020.
On Tuesday, von der Leyen called on all unvaccinated people to get the jab as soon as possible in order to avoid a new wave of infections.
"The pandemic is not over, we must remain vigilant," she said in a statement.
