Healthcare workers and nursing homes in Dallas County in the U.S. state of Texas will have COVID-19 vaccines later this month, a local official said Thursday.

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a statement, "I anticipate that we will be giving the vaccine to healthcare workers and the nursing home population later this month and so there is a light at the end of the tunnel."

"However, we are not there yet and it is imperative that we all do what we can do to get a little bit safer for ourselves, our community and our country until the vaccine can have its effect," it said.

On Wednesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state would receive 1.4 million doses of coronavirus vaccines this month.

The number of new confirmed cases continues to soar in Texas. According to the Texas Health and Human Services, as of Wednesday, there were over 1.2 million confirmed COVID-19 cases in the southern state.

Dallas County recorded the second most cases. On Thursday, the county reported 2,122 new cases. Three new deaths were also reported and all victims had underlying health conditions.
