The southwest Chinese city of Chengdu won the bid to host the 2025 World Games at the 2019 International World Games Association (IWGA) Congress in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday. It is the first time that the Games come to the Chinese mainland.

Having already won the host rights of the 2019 World Police and Fire Games last summer and the 2021 Summer Universiade this March, Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province and the leader of China's new first-tier cities, meets all the conditions to hold more international sports events there.

The World Games focuses on around 40 events which don't belong to the Olympic Games and happens every four years in the year following the Olympic Games. The next World Games will be hosted in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, from July 15 to 25, 2021.

The IWGA officials have visited Chengdu in March and appreciated the existing sportive venues and the preparations of the local organizing committee. The Chengdu World Games will be the event's 12th edition, and will take place from August 7 to 17, 2025.
