The book titled "Chuang Li Chuang Wai" (or "Inside and Outside the Window") is Lin's first publication since she retired as an actress in 1994.

A fulfilling life post-stardom

Lin married her current husband in 1994 and since then has led a quiet, ordinary life, taking care of their children and cultivating her mind by practicing calligraphy, meditating and writing.

Lin noted that she had played various roles in films, but never a stepmother or a writer.

As stepmother to her eldest daughter, Lin said, "In my personal life, family is most precious. Divorce was so tough and heartbreaking for me, and since my remarriage, being a stepmother has been very difficult. But right now I am totally satisfied with those I love。"

Lin has included prologues written by her three kids in the book. "All parents want to leave the best to their children. I compiled the articles that I wrote into a book and gave it to my girls. This is one of my best gifts for them," explained Lin.

In the prologue written by her eldest daughter, Lin is described as a "night owl."

Lin admits that she usually stays up very late. She once practiced calligraphy for seven or eight consecutive hours on New Year's Eve and fell asleep writing. "I woke up and my white bed spread was stained with ink," recalled Lin. "But I felt quite happy actually, imagining that I had become a bit of a scholar somehow."

Lin has a clear plan for her future. "I told my husband that I hope to be an artist when I am 60."
